RiSE BOX
A community based boxing project targeting adult males with a key focus to improve physical & mental health. Weekly physical activity boxing sessions and monthly mental health workshops.
Mental health and emotional wellbeing are a significant issue, and these have been greatly impacted by the covid-19 pandemic and the cost of living crisis. Loneliness remains an increasing challenge, based on the Essex Resident survey around a third of the population feel they lack companionship (34%) and feel isolated from others (33%). Additionally, many areas in Essex have very high suicide rates, with 4 areas in Essex being within the 20 nationally.
73% of adults who ‘go missing’ are men
63.8% of adults in Essex are overweight
Braintree, Essex male suicide rate (17.61 per 100,000)
19.9% higher than the national average (14.69)
iMove
Weekly physical activity sessions with the option for
on-demand content targeted at 55+ adults.
Delivered in local community venues & care homes.
iMove provides engaging exercise and digital activity content 365 days a year, across a diverse range of topics, meaning care teams are able to support residents to tune into live and recorded seated exercise sessions such as ballet, chair yoga and mindfulness. These sessions combine a mixture of cardio, strength, core, flexibility, and balance work to ensure that you stay fighting fit and are ready and able to take on everyday tasks.
Research shows that you’re far more likely to be inactive the older you get.
27% of 55-74 year-olds nationally are inactive,
rising to 49% for over 75s.
The situation is exacerbated by the fact we have an ageing population – the number of people aged 60 or over is expected to pass the 20 million mark by 2030 according to the Office for National Statistics – so it’s important we act now to help change behaviours.
In developing this programme, it was identified that older people who were not physically active were less able to do everyday tasks. The reasearch also showed that older people felt that making a contribution to society, such as volunteering was good for their mental wellbeing
